SO I’ve always wondered if the blue glow coming off nuclear reactors in the movies was real or not.

Well. I got to visit a research reactor today and it turns out, it’s not fake!

It’s called Cherenkov Radiation. 

From Wikipedia:  electromagnetic radiation emitted when a charged particle (such as an electron) passes through a dielectric medium at a speed greater than the phase velocity of light in that medium

It is a very pretty and serene light.
